New research indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
