Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
